How To Maintain Your Washing Machine

Keeping your washing machine maintained can expand its life and keep your clothes smelling fresh

Is your washing machine leaving your clothes smelling musty despite using fresh and floral scented soaps and softeners? It might be time to give your washing machine a little TLC to revamp your laundry and return your washing routine to its former glory!

Neglecting your washing machine can lead to a mass of issues: from unsightly mold growth and funky odors to mechanical failures that can cost a pretty penny. Regular maintenance ensures your appliance runs smoothly, extends its lifespan, and keeps your washing consistently fresh and clean.

1. Clean the Drum

Over time, detergent residue, fabric softener, and grime can accumulate inside the drum. To prevent this, run an empty cycle with hot water and two cups of white vinegar. This natural cleaner breaks down buildup and disinfects the drum. For an extra touch, wipe the drum with a soft cloth dipped in a vinegar-water solution.

 2. Inspect and Clean the Filter

Your washing machine’s filter catches lint, coins, and other debris. Check the filter once a month and clean it thoroughly. A clogged filter can disrupt drainage and reduce washing efficiency. Consult your machine’s manual to locate and remove the filter.

3. Maintain the Door Seal

The rubber door seal, or gasket, is a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Wipe it down with a cloth soaked in a mixture of water and mild detergent after each wash. Ensure it’s dry and leave the door slightly ajar to allow air flow.

4. Balance the Load

Overloading your machine can cause excessive wear and tear. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for load capacity, and distribute laundry evenly to maintain balance. An unbalanced load can lead to noisy operation and strain on the motor.

5. Use the Right Detergent

Always use detergent appropriate for your machine type and follow the dosing instructions. Excess detergent can leave residues, while too little can result in ineffective cleaning. Remember not to use fabric softener when washing towels as this will make them water repellent and less absorbent.
